The Shepherd and The Flock

Just like it was God’s idea for marriage, it was God’s idea for a shepherd to take care of His people.
Keep in mind that, a shepherd was to have a heart for the flock just like God has….

Here are some key Scriptures that teach us God’s model of shepherding to His people.

Numbers 27:15-17

Then Moses spoke to the LORD, saying: “Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, set a man over the congregation, who may go out before them and go in before them, who may lead them out and bring them in, that the congregation of the LORD may not be like sheep which have no shepherd.”

  1. God is a shepherd to His people, but God’s people also need a human representative of the Lord to exercise a shepherding care and concern for
  2. Without shepherds, sheep will not be able to take care of

Psalm 23 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. 3 He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

  1. God’s shepherding care relates to all areas of
  2. When sheep are truly cared for they do not lack but live an abundant

Proverbs 27:23 Be diligent to know the state of your flocks, and attend to your herds…

  1. Tending sheep requires alertness and diligence regarding the condition of the flock.
  2. But tending sheep takes a commitment both ways
  3. The sheep must trust the Shepherd, in knowing that the work of the shepherd is actually for their own betterment.

Jeremiah 23:1-4 “Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of My pasture!” says the LORD. 2 Therefore thus says the LORD God of Israel against the shepherds who feed My people: “You have scattered My flock, driven them away, and not attended to them. Behold, I will attend to you for the evil of your doings,” says the LORD. 3 “But I will gather the remnant of My flock out of all countries where I have driven them, and bring them back to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase. 4 I will set up shepherds over them who will feed them; and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, nor shall they be lacking,” says the LORD.

  1. Self-serving shepherds will give an account to the Heavenly Shepherd for how they have ministered to the
  2. God will see to it that His sheep are taken out of the hands of careless shepherds.

The word “shepherd” or “pastor” literally means “one who feeds.”

    1. Feeding involves rightly dividing the word of God

2 Tim. 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

The word of God is food, not the word of the pastor. The more we preach God’s word, the more sustenance and spiritual nutrition our preaching contains and the healthy the flock is.

    1. Proper feeding involves a balanced diet

Ps. 85:10 Mercy and truth have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed.

If the sheep are to be healthy they need a balanced diet. In the natural we need a balance of meat, fruit, vegetables, etc. In the spiritual realm it is the same. A balance of all the five fold ministry gifts,  and mercy and truth, law and grace, Word and the Spirit, theological and practical teaching.

    1. Proper feeding will bring rest to the flock

34:14-15 “I will feed them in good pasture, and their fold shall be on the high mountains of Israel. There they shall lie down in a good fold and feed in rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. I will feed My flock, and I will make them lie down,” says the Lord GOD.

As we grow and raise leaders in their God given gifts, know this..that whatever we plan and do, must never burn people out.

THERE IS A WAY TO ANSWER THE CALL THE IS RIGHT!

    1. Proper feeding will produce a healthy and reproductive flock

Jer. 23:3-4 “But I will gather the remnant of My flock out of all countries where I have driven them, and bring them back to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase. I will set up shepherds over them who will feed them; and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, nor shall they be lacking,” says the LORD.

Healthy sheep will naturally be fruitful and increase.

    1. Leading is the opposite of driving

33:13 But Jacob said to him, “My lord knows that the children are tender and that I must care for the ewes and cows that are nursing their young. If they are driven hard just one day, all the animals will die.” –NIV

You drive cattle, but you lead sheep. With cattle you can get behind them with a whip and drive them. With sheep you must go the way before them and bid them to come after you.

    1. Maturing the flock is God’s desire

Maturing at times involves correcting and disciplining when needed

Tit. 2:15 Speak these things, exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise you. You must teach these things and encourage your people to do them, correcting them when necessary. You have the authority to do this, so don’t let anyone ignore you or disregard what you say. – NLT

Pastors cannot be afraid to confront people in areas of lifestyle. Pastors who will not confront will have to live with many problems and error in the fold.

Maturing involves teaching practical principles of life

Ex. 18:20 And you shall teach them the statutes and the laws, and show them the way in which they must walk and the work they must do.

Mat 28:20  teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you:

    1. Shepherds must empower others into ministry

2 Tim 2:2 And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

Eph 4:11  And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12  to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,

As we grow as a church, we will people discover their gifts and step up and have application in their gits.

Some inside the church, some outside the church. Either way, this is the fruitfulness the scripture talks of, everyone being faithful with their own talents.

    8.      Shepherds must protect the flock

Ezek. 33:6 But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, and the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at the watchman’s hand.

Pastors are called to be watchmen. They are to warn people of impending danger

Titus 1:9-13 Paul speaks of deceivers “whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole households, teaching things which they ought not, for the sake of dishonest gain…rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith…”

After the Five Fold Ministry gifts were given and applied to the FLOCK

Eph 4:11  And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12  to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13  until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,  14  so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.  15  Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,  16  from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

God’s plan is to build His Kingdom through people like you and me!!!

    Will you join me?
